Comparing Implants to Dentures

If you have lost your teeth, you may be comparing implants to dentures. Both are viable ways to replace missing teeth, and at Henderson Family Dentistry, we can assist you with both of these options. There are significant differences, however, in how they function and how you will feel when wearing them. To discuss them in detail and to determine which solution is right for you, call (903) 486-3223 and schedule an appointment with our Henderson, TX dental office. In the meantime, here is what you should know about these two restorative solutions:

Dentures

For hundreds of years, people have been replacing teeth with dentures. Even George Washington wore dentures, and many of our 75652 prefer them. They are a partial or completely removable prosthetic that gives you the functionality and appearance of a whole smile. A complete set is secured in place by surrounding your gum tissue, whereas partials are typically secured using wires and clasps. At night, they will need to be removed for cleaning and soaking. While we can provide you with this solution in our Henderson dental office, we have found that many of our patients prefer something fixed and with more stability.

Dental Implants

The reason people tend to prefer dental implants is that they are permanently and securely placed. When you visit our 75652 office, we will examine you and take x-rays before letting you know if you are a good candidate for this procedure. If you are, we can implant a titanium post under your gums and secure it to your jawbone. In time, bone will build up around it through the process of osseointegration. This is what makes an implant so entirely secure. It essentially replaces your missing root system. Your jaw benefits from the procedure as well, since it will not receive the stimulation from when your tooth was previously in place. Once osseointegration is complete, you will return to our Henderson, TX dental office so an abutment and dental crown (new tooth) can be attached to the actual implant. The end result is a new tooth or teeth as natural-looking, secure, and durable as what you had before. You can eat whatever you want and maintain an active lifestyle without worrying about your teeth.

Dentures vs. Dental Implants: Convenience

At Henderson Family Dentistry, we understand that each of our patients have different priorities and goals. In this way, convenience is rather relative. Some of our 75652 patients like dentures because they do not require surgery and they can be produced rather quickly. While several appointments may be necessary to get the perfect fit, dentures can be worn without needing to wait for a recovery period. However, they will never fully behave or feel like natural teeth, some foods may be difficult to chew, and you have to take them out. This poses a level of inconvenience that many people are not willing to live with. Dental implants, on the other hand, take longer to place, so the overall process can be several months. However, once the procedure is complete, you never have to worry about your new tooth or teeth again. All you need to do is brush, floss, and have them professionally cleaned once or twice per year.
